An imaginary shelf becomes a small study in spacing, contrast and the things we choose to display.
Choose a starting point
Place three books, a bowl and one framed photograph on a shelf. Leave the remaining space empty for the moment. The aim is not to reproduce a photograph from a magazine, but to make every object easy to see and reach.
Change one thing
Move the photograph from the middle to one side. Then try turning the books so their spines face outward. Look at the arrangement from the place where the shelf is normally seen, rather than only from directly in front of it.
Leave a reason for the gap
An empty section can be temporary room for the book currently being read. Treat the arrangement as a working surface, not a finished display that nobody is allowed to touch.
