Ask a reader to locate a title, identify a category or find the next article. Keep the text the same in both sample layouts so the comparison has a clear focus.
Record what happens
Note where the reader looks and what causes confusion. Avoid interpreting a pause as proof of a broad preference. A small observation belongs to the task and setting in which it occurred.
Revise one element
Change spacing, hierarchy or a label, then repeat the task. The exercise is not a competition for the universally best design. It is a way of improving a specific reading path.
